25th December 2016
One thing I was not looking particularly looking forward to this year was Christmas – unlike many others who were excited by the thought of spending Christmas on the beach it just didn’t appeal to me. I know that this sounds insane but to me Christmas is just not Christmas without cold weather, roaring fires, mugs of hot chocolate, eating way too much food and spending it with your friends and family. Despite this we did end up having a really fun day down at the beach IT JUST DIDN’T FEEL LIKE CHRISTMAS!!!
Not wanting to be a total grinch we attempted to bring a small slice of home over to Oz and organised a flat Christmas dinner a few days before Christmas itself and went all out (or as all out as backpackers can go) and cooked a big roast dinner with all the trimmings and a few bottles of wine. It also turned out to be our last evening with everyone as most people were leaving shortly after to continue their travels so the evening also doubled up as a perfect way to finish off our time in Melbourne (unfortunately not mine or Daniels as we are here until the end of Feb 😦 ).
I finished work on the 22nd which was really nice as it gave me a few extra days off before Christmas. We spent Christmas Eve shopping (left it a bit late I know) and wrapping presents before heading out for drinks with friends. Mum had sent us both over parcels for Christmas with presents and a stocking each so before going out we hung them up and laid our presents out ready for the morning.
Christmas morning we were up early ready to skype home and open our presents. It was such a bizarre feeling to be sat opening my presents on skype hearing everyone wish us a Merry Christmas whilst it was scorching hot outside! It didn’t matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t get into the Christmas Spirit.
After opening our presents we got our stuff together and headed for the beach. It turned out to be the hottest Christmas that Melbourne has had in 18 years with the temperature reaching 38 degrees. We had a really nice afternoon down on St Kilda beach sunbathing, swimming in the sea and sipping on a few beers. We didn’t end up have a BBQ like we had planned as it was so hot no one felt like eating! We stayed at the beach until sunset which was incredible and then headed back to our apartment in the city.
We really did have such a lovely day but I can safely say that I won’t be in any hurry to have another warm Christmas any time soon and will be making sure that I am home in time for Christmas next year!
