25th – 30th July 2016
Our time in Christchurch was pretty quiet as the city has still not recovered from the devastating effects of the 2011 earthquake and won’t have until at least 2025! People used to stay in Christchurch for up to 4 nights as there was so much to do but now they only stay a couple of nights at most. We ended up staying 5 nights because of how our flight to Australia fell and it was ok but there really isn’t a lot to do!
Monday was a complete write off – after checking in we literally stayed in bed all afternoon and evening catching up on Netflix and dosing up on loads of medicine! Tuesday we decided to venture out and see some of the city. Everywhere you look there are building sites and empty lots – the destruction the earthquake caused is still so evident even 5 years on.
Wednesday lunchtime Nicola arrived so me, her, Daniel and Ali went out for lunch and did some shopping before heading back to the hostel again! Thursday Ali left for Kaikora so that left the three of us in Christchurch. We ended up at a museum called Quake City which has loads of information about both the 2011 earthquake and past quakes in Christchurch. After looking around the museum it is clear to see why there is so little to do in Christchurch anymore, however they do have big plans to rebuild and hopefully by 2025 it will be complete and tourists will come flooding back. After the museum we headed down to the Restart mall which was constructed shortly after the 2011 quake so that people had somewhere to go to get food, some shopping and also use the bank and post office. It was originally only supposed to be temporary but it has become so popular that it’s now a permenant feature in the city.
Friday was another quiet day spent getting all our stuff organised ready for our flight to Australia. It was also really weird as it was our last day with Nicola who we have just spent the last 5 weeks with! We left the hostel saturday morning at 4am on the shuttle bus to the airport.
I can’t believe that I have been away from home now for just over 4 months and that I am now onto the last destination of my trip – Australia! We are currently in Melbourne where we are hoping to find work for a few months to fund our trip up the east coast before flying home to England. We have no idea what the next few months hold for us but I know that it’s going to be very exciting BUT if everything falls through expect to see me home very very soon!
