Agra and the Taj Mahal

Sunday 27th March 2016

We left the hotel in Delhi around 5am Sunday morning and got a taxi to New Delhi Railway station to catch our 2 hour train to Agra.

The train was surprisingly nice – the seats were quite roomy and the carriage had AC. We were brought round bottles of water each, some tea and biscuits and then breakfast which was some lemon and lime water, bread and  2 vegetable croquet type things with about 2 chips and some peas… Standard!

We were soon in Agra where we got a mini bus to our hotel. The plan was that as we were arriving so early we wouldn’t be able to check into our rooms so we were going to leave our bags and head out to explore some of Agra, see the Agra Fort and/or the Baby Taj come back to the hotel and check in and then go to see the Taj Mahal at sunset. However, the weather wasn’t looking very good in the afternoon so we decided to do the Taj Mahal in the morning and do the others in the afternoon.

When we got to the entrance of the Taj Mahal the crowds were massive (no iconic pictures then!) I had already been told by a guy I met at my hostel in Delhi that they had scaffolding around 3 of the towers which I thought might be a bit disappointing but actually it wasn’t!

It is such a beautiful building and is so big!! I cannot believe it was built for one person! Although she never actually got to see it as she died before it had been built!

After the Taj Mahal we came back to the hotel and checked in and then went out to see Agra Fort which was really cool and had some amazing views!

After the fort we came back to the hotel for a few hours and then went out for dinner. I had a spinach and mushroom dish with a plain naan which was really good. The next morning we left at around 8am for Jaipur which was a 6 hour bus journey. Tonight is my last night in Jaipur and I have absolutely loved it – it’s been my favourite place so far. I will do another blog shortly about my time in Jaipur and I have some AMAZING pictures to show you!
